About the Speaker:
Bishop Dr Hwa Yung is the 4th Bishop of the Methodist Church in Malaysia. Bishop Hwa Yung graduated in 1970 from the University of Tasmania, majoring in Organic Chemistry. Subsequent he completed the B.D. and M.Th. from the University of London and a doctorate in missiology at Asbury Theological Seminary, USA in 1995.
Bishop Hwa Yung joined the Trinity Annual Conference as the pastor of Grace Methodist Church Kuala Lumpu in 1981. He was then appointed lecturer in Christian Theology in 1982 in Seminari Theoloji Malaysia and became the principal in 1986, a post he held till June 2001. In July 2001, he was appointed the 1st Director of the Center for the Study of Christianity in Asia (CSCA), Trinity Theological College, Singapore.
Over the years he has held significant positions in various church and mission-related bodies, both in Malaysia and on the international scene. Presently, he is the Chairman of the Council of Trustees of the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies (OCMS), Chairman of the Asian Methodist Council, and a member of the Congress Management Team for the 3rd Lausanne Congress, Cape Town 2010. He has also authored a couple of books, and a substantial number of papers and articles in academic journals and books in the fields of mission and Asian Christianity.
He is married to Dr. Lee Bee Teik and they have three children, Yang Jerng, Xin Ping, and En Ning.
